Holistic Pet Cuisine & Market – Feed Smart

This retailer has made pet nutrition serious business in her store.
By Wendy Bedwell-Wilson

Barbara Ratner and her husband, Howard, opened Holistic Pet Cuisine and Market in Boca Raton, Fla., four years ago, just prior to the pet food recalls that swept through the marketplace in the spring of 2007. As entrepreneurs, the couple found themselves at the right place at the right time with the right mix of products and knowledge to draw customers who were concerned about what they were pouring into their pets’ food bowls.

Barbara Ratner (left) helps a customer make a decision about food for her dog.

Their business, which focused on delivery of wholesome pet foods, boomed—and it shows no sign of slowing, thanks to their dedication to providing food and supplies focused on pets’ health and vitality.“A lot of the issues animals have right now can be resolved by getting on the right diet, period,” Ratner said. “Everything we do is driven by nutrition. That’s the guts of our business. The other products, the collars, shampoos, toys, enzymes, they all have to be safe for pets. I’m tough about bringing in product. If it doesn’t have the right ingredients, I won’t stock it.”

A self-described “nutritional detective,” Ratner and her staff of four pride themselves on their ability to recommend pet food and gear that’s well suited to each dog. It all starts with a consultation.

“We’ll sit down at my desk and I’ll ask [the customer] what they’re feeding their dog on a daily basis and what they’ve been doing in the past,” said Ratner, who says she has been studying nutrition for more than 20 years. “And then I’ll open their eyes up to what they’re doing wrong.

When they see that, they’re amazed, and once they switch to the right diet, their pets are never the same again.”

Customer comments on the retailer’s website testify to some very positive changes in pets whose owners shop there.

These reports provide a lot of satisfaction for Ratner.

“I can sleep at night and it makes me happy,” she said. “Nothing breaks your heart more than seeing a dog suffer, and there are so many dogs that suffer from the wrong foods and the effects of them. It feels good to do what’s right. I care about my customers and I care about their pets.”

Ratner shares her e-mail address and cell phone number with clients and encourages them to call or text her when they have questions.

“If a customer or one of my sales staff has a question, I’m at my phone so I can get them the answer quickly,” Ratner said. “That customer service is so important in this business. That’s what we pride ourselves on. If the customer has a question and they hear a voice on the other end of the phone, they feel a lot better.”

Her efforts, however, aren’t without challenges. Customers question why their veterinarians don’t consult with them like the team at Holistic Pet Cuisine does.

“It’s a challenge getting through to pet owners,” Ratner explained. “They’ll ask, ‘Why didn’t my veterinarian tell me this?’ We not only teach our clients  about the different foods and holistic products available for their animals,  but we insist they go back to their veterinarians and discuss their new  health and holistic decisions. But people really do listen and I get through to them. They trust me, and that’s the whole key to our success.”

Ratner also believes strongly in committing to an entire product line rather than picking and choosing flavors or varieties.

“You have to bring it in depth,” she said. “That way, you can stand behind the product. You can’t show a customer just one flavor. You need the whole assortment because a dog should have variety. You’re short-changing them. That’s what we believe, and we sell it. And they buy it. And the dogs love it. And they’re healthier because of it.”

Though she stocks deep, Ratner’s store looks well organized. Stainless steel shelves display the retailer’s range of supplies. Displays highlight seasonal items, like red wagons overflowing with toys and collars and leashes carefully strewn on wooden racks. Holistic Pet Cuisine does not sell pets, but Ratner encourages customers to visit local shelters.

As for future plans, Ratner is thinking big.

“We’d like to roll this out and franchise Holistic Pet Cuisine,” she said. “We’re looking for additional stores and other locations. We’ve done our homework, we’ve got the framework down, and that’s our next step.”

Ratner said she is currently in the process of negotiating franchises in five different marketsand will launch a line of organic treats in the near future.

Her passion for pet care and nutrition will make her efforts will be a success. Ratner says.

“We are part of the community, and [people say], ‘If Holistic Pet Cuisine carries it, it’s good for your dog,’” Ratner said. “It’s all about nutrition and it’s all about your pet. We will not compromise.”

Marie Moody’s Puppy Love

A sickly shelter dog named Chewy grabbed hold of this mom’s heart and inspired the former fashion rep to launch an organic dog food company.

Marie Moody's Puppy Love

My life as a New York City fashion sales rep was glamorous, but vacant. I was often fired from my jobs. At my last position, the highlight of my day was lunch! So when I was let go, I wandered down Seventh Avenue certain I needed a serious career change.

About the same time, I had adopted Stella, a terrier mix. She was adorable but destructive. I figured she’d be happier if she had a boyfriend—and I’d have unchewed shoes—so Chewy, an airedale/sharpei mix, joined the family. I soon found out from the vet that he was very sick with distemper. I began researching raw diets so I could nurse Chewy back to health. I shopped at Whole Foods, filling my cart with organic meats and veggies, which I prepared for him. Chewy’s health dramatically improved on this organic dog food diet.

Well-meaning dog owners spend millions on puppy spas and pretty little sweaters, but not so much on their pets’ dietary needs. I felt people would invest in organic raw pet food if they understood how important good nutrition was to their beloved animals’ longevity. Based on my success with chewy, I was determined to bring a healthy pet food product to market. I spent the next six months writing a business plan, did tons of research and drained my savings. Stella & Chewy’s, my organic raw pet food line, was born in 2004. The food is freeze-dried and shelf-stable, so it can be safely stored in your pantry. For the first couple of years, I ran the business from my tiny apartment. There were industrial freezers in my living room instead of sofas, and I hand-delivered orders by taxi. My business was growing, but I was holding it back.

So I moved back to my hometown of Muskego, WI, and built a 15,000-square-foot manufacturing plant. Today, Stella & Chewy’s is sold in some 3,700 stores nationwide and online. We’ve recently moved into a much larger plant, and I oversee 60 employees. My seven year-old son, Charles, thinks my job is cool, and I love that I’m helping pets stay healthy. And both Stella and Chewy think I’m the top dog.

Holistic Pet Cuisine where nutrition is key!

Holistic Pet Cuisine can help you prevent UTI’s in cats and dogs…We know it’s all about diet. Let Holistic Pet Cuisine in Boca Raton help you be proactive.561-241-9151

Can you prevent UTI’s from developing? In some cases yes!

by Barbara Ratner on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 8:02am

How do you prevent UTI’s in dogs and cats?

So you have a dog or cat that has chronic UTI’s (urinary tract infections) and you are constantly taking them to the vet for antibiotics and a veterinarian diet to prevent them from forming.

But…they keep coming back!

How does that happen?

Do you know the differences between “struvite” and ” calcium oxalate crystals”?

Animals with urine that is too alkaline can be prone to struvite crystals!

Crystals can turn into stones very quickly so you need to respond with more moisture and not only from their water bowls!

Animals with urine that is too acidic can develop “calcium oxalate stones”.

The two main types of crystals ate diametrically opposed to one another.

You have to be very careful when trying to treating crystals yourself. Most people try acidifying the urine by adding supplements that make the urine more acidic but this is a challenge unless you know what you are doing. Most do not so be careful and always partner with your vet .

Always remember If you make the urine too acidic than you are dealing with acidic urine and possible calcium oxalate stones which are harder to treat!

“But I have a water bowl down on the floor at all times” I hear this everyday. Most people think that having a water bowl available for their pets is enough. If this were true then there would be fewer cats and dogs with constant UTI’S and painful trips to the vet.

Diet and nutrition play a major part in your pets diet. It always amazes me to see cats and dogs left on a dry food diet with only their water bowls to supply the moisture they need. Cats and more recently dogs are constantly afflicted with UTI’S and the main reason for that is there is no moisture in their dry food diets!

Always remember that although we all worry about our their teeth we do not question what is going on throughout their bodies? We hear from everyone that “our dogs need dry food for their teeth” but we still take our dogs for their annual dental cleaning.

Keep one thing in mind that moisture from the food source will keep the urinary tract hydrated and prevent toxins like bacteria and crystals to form.

If you pet has been afflicted only once with UTI’S then dry food is not for them because it will come back if left on the same type of diet.

Don’t be against canned “wet” food it can be your pets best friend!

Come in and let us show you what we recommend in preventing these painful UTI’S from forming.

Be proactive and your pet will thank you!

Holistic Pet Cuisine of Boca Raton would like to announce the arrival of Stella and Chewy’s Freeze Dried Cat Food. Everyday low prices on all Stella and Chewy’s Raw and Freeze dried food.

Home

When Marie rescued Chewy from an animal shelter, he was a severely sick pup. she put him on a raw meat diet upon a veterinarian’s advice. Chewy recovered and he and his best friend, Stella, thrived on this diet.

Marie’s experience with Chewy taught her that the right food (and a lot of love) can promote a pet’s health and well-being. But, the more she learned about animal nutrition, the less she could understand why there wasn’t a commercial product as good as what she could make at home. So with the help of veterinary nutritionists, Marie Moody created Stella & Chewy’s.

It may come as a surprise, but your cute kitty is still a carnivore. She must consume meat to survive. Chick, Chick Chicken Dinner, for example, contains farm-raised chicken as the first ingredient. Plus just the right amount of taurine, which is essential for feline health. Just like all our products, it’s made without grain, fillers, artificial preservatives or colorings. We didn’t even add sugar or salt! And every ingredient we use is sourced from reputable suppliers.
